This is how it all began...

I read this blog post which asked us to blog our way to fitness. Writing about our workouts and goals everyday would really help us and others reading the blog.

To give you some background, I first became serious about losing weight in 2007. I was in Hyderabad, about 65 kilos and not feeling good about myself. I signed up for a personal trainer for a month. I thought I needed someone at least in the first month to tell me what to do, and I'd do everything by myself after that. Rookie mistake. Once someone tells you what to do, you're too lazy to actually do anything by yourself. I should've signed up for a year and saved myself a whole lot of money. Instead, I paid for three months at a time for the next year and a half.

The results at that gym were pretty significant in terms of the inches I lost. I don't remember the exact number right now, but it was somewhere around 20 or more inches, total. In terms of weight, I must have lost about five kilos. Not impressive at all. Considering that I was more or less regular for the year and a half. Three times a week. I wasn't very good at controlling my diet though. However, at the end of it, I was quite happy with the way I looked.

I went to Australia and was very sporadic with my exercising there. I joined the University gym. They had group classes, and I found myself more motivated to go for yoga and pilates than a session at the gym. I was pretty irregular, but my weight managed to stay around the 61 kilo mark.

I came back to India, and forgot about all exercise plans. My diet was out of this world. I ate everything. When I started feeling guilty, I started going for power yoga. Regularly for about a month. That kept my weight in check for a little bit. I moved to Bangalore in March. Joined a gym called PINK in Indiranagar. The one year package was Rs 9,999. It was a women's only gym. I wasn't very impressed with the instructors. They wrote out a card for me and then didn't really seem to care. For some reason though, I lost 2 kilos in the first month. I stopped going after a month and a half though because I had to move apartments and the gym became too far away for me.

Then, I didn't exercise for all of May and June and really let myself go. I didn't watch what I ate, I didn't exercise at all except to take the dogs out.

FINALLY, I decided enough was enough and that I needed to lose some weight soon. It seems to be the year of the weddings, and I don't want to look fat in my best friend's wedding photographs. I read up about a few of the gyms online. I wanted something that was relatively close to where I lived. I, also, wanted a good gym with good trainers that know what they're doing and will be able to help me out with my training.

I decided to check out Fitness First at Eva Mall in Bangalore. I took a tour of the place and really liked it. A lot of cardio machines, a lot of space for weight and strength training. They also offered free group classes which I thought was perfect at the time. I signed up almost immediately. My gym membership works out to be about 2,500 per month. I decided to sign up for personal training because I needed someone to help with out in the first couple of months.

The personal training works out to be pretty expensive, but, I think it's worth it and the end of everything. 30 one-hour sessions for 15,000 Rs. And, the sessions expire at the end of four months. My trainer suggested that I have two strength training sessions per week and the other three days, I concentrate on cardio. My trainer looked relatively young, but seemed to know what he was doing, and I was quite happy with the way sessions were going. However, he seemed really focused on weights, and not enough strength training. Also, he didn't carry his book around with him all the time, so I wasn't sure he'd remember what we did at our last session. Anyway, he sprained his leg last week and has to rest for six weeks, so he's transferred me to another trainer for the time being. I actually like him a little better. He's much tougher, he gives me a lot of free exercises. Concentrates on all my problem areas. Let's see what happens now.
